Channelling Tom Thomson - New Landscape Painting, "The Lake"

The Lake, 30" x 30"

Lately, I've been thinking about the work of the iconic Canadian painter Tom Thomson.

Although he painted around the turn of the 20th Century, his work is still fresh, engaging and contemporary.

Tom wasn't afraid to experiment and in doing so, he greatly influenced a number of young painters across Canada - they became the renowned Group of Seven.

So there I was, standing in front of a new 30" x 30" canvas with Tom Thomson on my mind and palette knife in hand. I guess it's not too surprising that when the painting was completed, I looked at the canvas and said, "that sure looks like the Canadian lakes of my youth!"*  Thanks Tom.

* This is not to imply that I was a youth at the turn of the 20th Century. LOL!

New Landscape Oil Painting - "Storm Clouds"

"Storm Clouds", 36" x 36", Oil

I love to work on these larger canvases (and have plans to go much bigger).

Palette knife paintings are probably my favorite way to paint as the process itself feels bolder, and I think the dramatic subject here suits that way of working.

I'm trying to build up my email  newsletter list and if you would be interested in receiving a periodic email newsletter with studio news, new paintings, and insights into my process and art life, please click HERE. I'd appreciate it greatly.
